SWD Extension Programs - Effective July 1, 2021, SWD teachers in grades 7–12 who teach special classes in subject-specific areas must: Be certified in each subject area they teach, OR meet experience requirements for the Statement of Continued Eligibility (SOCE) and have an active SOCE application in TEACH. Teacher Centers have been approved to offer 45- hour CTLE courses in ELA, Math, and Biology to support these certification requirements. We are currently offering programs in ELA and Biology. NYSUT-The Science of Reading, A Practical Approach For Educators
This free, in-depth course on reading instruction is designed for educators across all grade levels. It provides the latest, research-backed strategies for teaching literacy and explores evidence-based methods grounded in current literacy research—helping teachers enhance their instructional practices and improve student outcomes.

Hudson River Teacher Center
Students with Disabilities Extension Series: Grades 7 & 8
Special educators who currently hold a NYS Students with Disabilities Generalist Grades 1–6 certification and are interested in obtaining the Grades 7 & 8 extension are invited to participate in this program. The Hudson River Teacher Center is offering the Grades 7 & 8 Extension Series at no cost to participants. The series will run from July 6–31, 2026 and includes the following three courses:
Knowledge of Students (15 hours)
Instructional Strategies (15 hours)
Professional Practice (15 hours)
These courses meet the NYS Students with Disabilities CTLE certification requirements for extending an existing NYS Students with Disabilities Generalist Grades 1–6 certification to include Grades 7 & 8.
